The Mandala Hotel
Potsdamer Strasse 3, 10785 Berlin, Germany
4th October 2015

Berlin is full of fabulous design hotels, but there’s one property which has been among the city’s most prized design destination hotels for longer than any other; The Mandala.

The Mandala has a fabulous location, right on bustling Postdamerplatz and within walking distance from some of the main city attractions (Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Holocaust Memorial - just to name a few).
Tegel Airport can be reached in around 20 minutes by car, while Schönefeld Airport is a 45-minutes' drive away.
Who stays?
Business travellers, design aficionados, posh couples, spa and fine-dining lovers. Not really a place for families.
Style and Character
A strong passion for contemporary design, and the personal taste towards elegant, straight lines, are evident traits of Lutz Hesse and Christian Andresen, managing partners at The Mandala since the hotel opening - now some 15 years ago.
The hotel has a strong character, very appealing to discerning businessmen and elegant, modern couples - and less to travellers looking for interaction with other guests in a warm atmosphere or cozy common spaces.
Service was excellent throughout my stay. Check-in procedures were handled quickly and smoothly by the young, smiley staff. They clearly did their best to enhance my stay - from the sweet welcome with truffle chocolates in my room, to the very kind private concierge ladies who provided me with anything I needed at any time. Everybody was nice and helpful (not remarkably warm, but we're in Berlin, right?...), attentive and ready to assist with directions and tips for my tours around the city.
Rooms and Suites
The first thing you'll appreciate in your room at The Mandala is the size - they range from a minimum of 40 square metres (Studio rooms) up to 200 of the Penthouse - something you would not imagine at first when you step in to the relatively small lobby. Natural light and a skillful use of design also contribute to the perception of very spacious, bright rooms, yet equipped with all the comforts you could expect, and more - like a walk-in wardrobe and kitchenette in all room categories.
Small details and several high-tech touches will definitely enhance your stay, like the hotel's own CD compilations available in-room and the central sound system piping the music throughout the space.
If you're not on a tight budget (from EUR410 up), the suites on the 11th floor (same as the spa) are our top choice - VERY spacious inside, and featuring equally big terraces with stunning views to Postdamerplatz.
Food and Drink
FACIL is a name that many know in Berlin, probably better than Mandala (as it always happens, locals are much more into the food than the hotel scene of their city!). In fact FACIL, The Mandala's main restaurant, boasts 2 Michelin stars and it's a very popular venue. The space isn't very big (another reason why it gets fully booked very easily) but the design and feel are enjoyable - clean and elegant, with floor-to-ceiling windows directly facing the lush courtyard. I haven't tried the restaurant for dinner, but the breakfast buffet and à-la-carte menu were just delicious (bread and croissants baked in-house, freshly squeezed juices, a wide selection of eggs)... not cheap for local standards (EUR27 per person), but Michelin-blessed!
The QIU is FACIL's "little brother"on the first floor, a more casual venue ideal for business lunches or drinks before/after dinner.
Features, Wellness, and Amenities
The Mandala's ONO Spa on the top floor is another unique experience not to be missed during your stay. It covers 600 square meters and features different rooms for any kind of private treatments, plus common facilities where guests can enjoy great relaxing moments with top views to Berlin busy centre.
The fitness centre, open 24/7, is also located on the 11th floor, very spacious, well equipped and - what I appreciate the most - there's a lot natural light coming in.
Perceived Value
This kind of quality would cost an absolute fortune in London or New York - Berlin prices are more reasonable, and The Mandala is very well-priced.
With no doubts a great address in the city if you're looking for privacy, comfort and some special indulgence.
